RT8979 由 USB 埠附件检测器和 USB1、USB2、UART 和 MHL 选择开关构成，它含有 I<SUP>2</SUP>C 控制介面和确定连接外设所属类型的多种检测方法。</br>RT8979 通过对 USB 介面 ID 引脚状态和 VBUS 电压的检测来完成对外接附件的检测，ID 引脚的阻抗和 VBUS 电压的不同确定了不同的附件来源。作为主控制器的 MCU 通过 I<SUP>2</SUP>C 介面可对开关位置进行控制，也通过它来读取附件检测的结果。RT8979 也可检测不同的充电器类型，其中包括专用充电器（它们的 D+/D- 处于短路状态）和大功率的主机/集线器充电器。
